Coaching

Coaching in Scotland is managed by the SCA Coaching Committee. The coaching committee of the SCA works to provide a strong and supportive network of coaches for everyone who wants to get involved in our sport, whether you are just trying it for the first time or are aiming to compete.  Coaches can help you to develop your skills whether you just want to paddle for recreation or are seeking that perfect competition run!  The SCA have a full time Coach Education and Development Manager (CEDM) in post working closely with the committee to develop coaching across the country.

Coaching Scheme

Members of the Coaching Scheme are active in all areas of paddlesports. To benefit from the activities of the Coaching Scheme simply contact your Regional Coaching Organiser (RCO), Local Coaching Organiser (LCO) or the SCA Office.  Local clubs also provide access to coaching and many coaches are most active within clubs.

The Coaching Scheme provides:

  • A safe, enjoyable and complete introduction to the sport
  • A network of qualified and experienced coaches;
  • Access to expertise in all areas of the sport;
  • A full range of courses from novice to expert;
  • UK recognised awards with consistently maintained standards;
  • A Coaching Organiser in each region;
  • Advice on all aspects of the sport;
  • Contact with the various disciplines of the sport.

Approval for Courses - Contact the BCU

Any Coach Training or Assessment courses must have a course authorisation number. These can only be obtained by appropriately qualified assessors. BCU UKCC course authorisation numbers can only be sought by the new Training Directors, and 'old style' course authorisations are obtainable by Contracted Course Providers.

Any coach wishing to run an assessment for any of the new 3* award, and 4* and 5* Leader Awards must also gain a course authorisation number.

To request authorisation, email course.authorisations@canoescotland.com stating which course or level and dates when taking place. Authorisation must be sought at least 3 weeks prior to the assessment date (for Performance Awards) or the training date!! . If you do not have an authorisation number then the course won't be recognised and the SCA will be unable to give certification.
